Maelstrom is our brand new heavyweight robot!

In July 2008 we decided to get involved with heavyweights. We eventually bought St Agro and have since carried out many upgrades to make it a little more competitive against todays machines. These upgrades included:

• A sidewinder to replace the 4QD speedos
• Completely rebuilding the electrics
• New Hawker Odyssey batteries
• Adding rubber tyres to increase traction
• New top cover
• A new name.

To make St Agro fit in better with our team we decided to rename it Maelstrom- which means a big whirlpool (which is good seeing as we have a featherweight called Whirlpool).

 A little bit about St Agro:

St Agro was built by Terry Carlin for robot wars series 6 where it lost in the first round. It was then modified and entered into series 7 where it won its heat before being knocked out by X-Terminator in the semi-finals.

The weapon is a full pressure CO2 flipper which is the only flipper which can work equally well both ways up, this means that no gas has to be used to self right.

The drive is from 2, 24v 800watt Litton motors through a custom made gearbox. This gives plently of pushing power.

 The entire chassis is built from 6mm aluminium which has been "borrowed" from a Merlin helicopter.

 The flipper is powered by a single 75mm bore ram which operates 2 sets of levers which opens the jaws. The ram opens with approximately 2 and a half tonnes of force which gives enough power to throw heavyweights out of the arena.
